The Importance of Self-care
I work with parents of children with special needs who feel overwhelmed and at the end of their rope. My clients come to me because they feel stressed to the max. Because they’re constantly waiting for the shoe to drop, for the phone call, for the next thing to happen that they’re living the negative and everything feels like an emergency because there’s always just one more thing to handle and it never ends.
What my clients don’t realize is that their physical symptoms stem from chronic stress and chronic low levels of anxiety so they go to their doctor complaining of acid reflux, headaches, migraines, aches and pains, bad sleep, bowel issues, anger, irritability, depression, sinus infections, and just getting sick a lot.
What my clients don’t realize is that the small things, like an event at work where work is the escape oddly enough, would trigger a physical response, for me, it was heart palpitations and it didn’t make any sense why such a small thing would trigger such a big response. Only when I started to learn about what happens to the body when it’s under chronic stress, did my physical symptoms start to make sense.
But then I realized I had a huge, scary problem on my hands because my life wasn’t going to change, the stress wasn’t going to get any better so if I was physically and emotionally breaking down --- how was I supposed to handle my life?
Because I understand what it’s like to have a child with special needs, and because I saw myself going down a road that would end in me crashing, I knew that I had to do something and since there aren’t any doctor specializing in supporting parent caregivers I knew I was on my own to figure out how to best support myself mentally and physically so I could best support and care for my whole family.
That’s why I created Selfcare4Caregivers which offers support for parents of children with special needs. The system targets the 3 pillars that are needed in order to ensure that my clients best support their mental and physical states because their current life situation isn’t changing so this program gives them the tools and strategies needed to ensure that they stay healthy and strong so that they can handle the next thing that comes their way.
